News on Overweight Problem in Mexico
![]() |
Obesity is everywhere I read the news the other day and found out a shocking news on overweight problem in Mexico. They just did a national campaign called “Vamos Por Un Million de Kilos” (Let’s lose a million kilos). This is the campaing to get Mexicans to collectively reduce their weight for about two million pounds. |
| The project is meant to fight growing obesity problem in Mexico. It is the problem that is catching up with the one of their neighbor, United States. US is now one of the world fattest countries. Mexican government announced that almost half of their population, 110 million people, are overweight. In addition, in the last ten years, the increase rate of the number of fat children is about eight per cent.
Economically, Mexican government said the obesity problem can cost the country a lot of money. It now causes many continuing health problems to the people including heart diseases, diabetes, hypertension etc. The country has the disease rates to prove it. According to government statistics, new cases of high blood pressure increased 24 per cent in Mexico in just six years, from 2000 to 2006. New cases of Type 2 diabetes, believed to be linked in part to obesity, jumps 31 per cent during that time. Mexico is promoting food education and health related knowledge to the children as one of the tools to make people aware of the problem. They will also build and renovate around 800 public sport facilities in the country. Mexico is working to mandate more physical education in public schools and encourage employers and unions to give workers time for exercise. The administration of President Felipe Calderon says it has built or renovated more than 800 public sports facilities around the country. And the National Institute of Public Health is promoting food education and healthier choices in schools, such as fruits and vegetables instead of chips and soda. Mexican food is high in fat and calories. The country has the problem of not enough crops so the people switch their food to more fatty and more carbohydrate food.
